For Three Quick Questions, I send the same three questions to admission representatives at colleges all over the country, and then I hope to hear back from them. The three questions are meant to probe some of the things that make a school unique but that aren’t easily captured as a stat to go in a book or web search.
Today’s response is from Maya Wolf, Admissions Counselor at Binghamton University, State University of New York in Binghamton, New York.
What is a course, tradition, program or event that is unique to Binghamton University?
On-campus housing at Binghamton is divided into six residential colleges, a model that gives students the small-school experience within our midsized university. Each residential community has a distinct character, unique traditions, and their own mascot! Mountainview College hosts an annual festival celebrating the yellow spotted salamanders that live in our Nature Preserve, while students living in College-in-the-Woods see their dining hall turn into a licensed casino for one night a year.
Naturally every college wants to recruit the perfect student--high grades, high test scores, involved in their community, leadership...everything. But what kinds of imperfect students tend to flourish at Binghamton?
No Binghamton student is perfect, which allows them to embrace the uncertainty and mistakes that come with learning. Binghamton students are passionate, dream big, and get their hands dirty with experiential opportunities like research or community engagement. Bearcats don’t fit into boxes, and they’re able to embrace their diverse interests with our interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum and hundreds of student clubs and organizations.
When people come to visit Binghamton, what's a place off campus that you recommend they check out while they're there?
During the warmer months, I always tell everyone to stop by Sugar Lips for ice cream before they head home. It’s a local favorite with lots of cool flavors like maple bacon, rose pistachio, cannoli, or PB&J, as well as the classics. In the winter, anyone that has time should go to a Binghamton Black Bears hockey game downtown.
